Real estate is often judged by listings, negotiations and sales results. Yet what truly sustains a successful brokerage is everything happening behind the scenes — the systems, people, partnerships and processes that support the work brokers do every day.
For the past 15 years, Jules Opperman has been part of that foundation at CRE Brokers. As Business Operations Manager, Jules’ role has focused on helping the business operate effectively — supporting brokers, managing marketing, developing systems and ensuring the business continues to evolve in an industry that never stands still.
When Jules first joined the business 15 years ago, CRE Brokers was a much smaller operation. Working alongside the directors and building a dedicated administration team, she became part of establishing the systems, marketing and operational structure that helped grow the brokerage into the well-recognised hospitality and accommodation specialist it is today.
From the early days, it was clear that building a strong business required more than just transactions. It required collaboration, structure, consistency and a team of people working together behind the scenes. Like many businesses, the journey has involved adapting to industry changes, embracing new technologies and continually refining the way the business operates — all while staying true to the values that built its reputation.
An Industry That Never Stands Still
When Jules first began working in real estate, the industry looked very different.
Marketing relied heavily on:
Over time, the landscape has shifted dramatically. Digital platforms, online search, property portals and social media now play a major role in how buyers discover opportunities. Today, many buyers research extensively online before ever speaking with a broker. Helping the business adapt to these changes has been a key part of Jules’ role — ensuring that marketing strategies, systems and processes continue to evolve alongside the way people search and engage with opportunities today.
Supporting the Engine Room of the Business
While brokers work directly with vendors and buyers, much of what keeps a brokerage running happens behind the scenes. Marketing campaigns must be coordinated. Listings must appear across multiple portals. Information memorandums need to be prepared. Buyer enquiries must be managed and systems maintained.
Jules’ focus has been helping create the structure and processes that allow brokers to concentrate on what they do best — connecting buyers and sellers and guiding transactions to successful outcomes. In many ways, operations becomes the engine room of the brokerage, quietly supporting every listing and deal.
Pivoting and Growing the Business
Like many industries, real estate requires businesses to continually adapt. One of the key evolutions of the business has been the growth of property management services supporting the accommodation and hospitality sector. Through CRE Brokers’ Property Management division, the team works with owners of motels, caravan parks, hotels and accommodation assets, providing professional management and operational support.
This service has become an important part of the business, allowing CRE Brokers to support owners not only when buying or selling a property, but also in protecting and managing the performance of their investment over the long term. By combining brokerage expertise with industry-focused property management, CRE Brokers continues to strengthen its position as a specialist in the accommodation and hospitality real estate sector, supporting owners throughout the lifecycle of their assets.
Maintaining strong relationships with external portal partners, technology providers and industry networks has also been an important part of staying current. These partnerships help ensure listings reach the right audiences while allowing the business to remain informed about new marketing tools, technology developments and industry trends. Remaining connected to these partners helps the business continue to evolve within a rapidly changing marketplace.
Integrity Over Noise
Throughout the past 15 years, one principle has remained constant — the importance of integrity. The real estate industry, like many industries, can sometimes become filled with noise. New marketing trends emerge, platforms evolve and different approaches come and go. But long-term success is rarely built on noise alone.
At CRE Brokers, the focus has always been on staying authentic, maintaining integrity and building genuine relationships with clients. Reputation isn’t something created overnight. It develops through consistent work, honest communication and professionalism — built steadily over many years.
Lessons from 15 Years Behind the Scenes
Looking back over the past 15 years, a few lessons have become clear. Real estate remains, at its core, a people business. Strong relationships continue to sit at the centre of every successful transaction. Systems and structure are equally important. Behind every brokerage that operates well are processes and people working quietly to keep everything moving.
Technology and marketing will always evolve. The way buyers discover opportunities today is very different to how it looked even a decade ago, and businesses must continue to adapt to remain relevant. Partnerships across the industry also play an important role. Working with brokers, portal partners, clients and industry networks strengthens the overall business and helps ensure opportunities reach the right audiences.
And perhaps one of the most important lessons is that no two transactions are ever the same. Every property, every owner and every buyer brings its own story and complexity.
What 15 Years Has Taught Me About Business
After 15 years working within the real estate industry, a few broader lessons about business stand out. Strong businesses focus on relationships, not just transactions. Technology, marketing platforms and buyer behaviour will continue to evolve, but integrity and trust remain constant.
Behind every successful business is a team of people quietly making things work, often behind the scenes. Adaptability is essential. Businesses that stay open to change are better positioned to navigate shifting markets and new opportunities. And perhaps most importantly, successful businesses are built over time through reputation, consistency and staying authentic to the people they serve.
Looking ahead, the real estate industry will continue to evolve as technology advances and the way people search for opportunities continues to change. But while the tools may evolve, the foundations of a strong business remain the same. Because while there may always be noise in any industry, it is integrity, authenticity and reputation that ultimately keep a business moving forward.
